HA 788 / HA 990 Seminar in Japanese Art

Cross-Border Dialogues in Japanese Art

How did art and material culture travel over time and how did it materially manifest? How do art historians in the present unravel these relationships of the past? Focusing on art in relation to religion, trade, and exploration in the premodern era, class discussions will revolve around the complex history of Japan’s cross-cultural interactions across Asia and beyond. Connections with Korea, China, and Ryukyu will be key. Students in the seminar will make use of objects in the Spencer Museum of Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Spencer Research Library, and elsewhere.

HA 788 and HA 990 are concentrated studies of a specific topic in art history. These courses may be repeated for credit if content varies. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
