Who Are We?
The art history department and affiliated faculty offer a wide range of courses focusing on painting, sculpture and architecture, prints, book arts, photography and new media, from prehistory to the present, in Europe, the U.S., East Asia, and Africa.
With award-winning professors and graduate teaching assistants, the art history department provides high-quality instruction in large introductory survey courses and upper-level courses and seminars with smaller class sizes that emphasize active learning.
Our research and teaching take full advantage of the rich collection of over 45,000 objects in the Spencer Museum of Art, one of the top-rated university art museums in the country. The department (including the digital resource collection, lecture halls, and seminar rooms) and the Murphy Art and Architecture Library occupy the first two floors of the museum building.
