Mission Statement

Art history explores the world of art and the world through art. A single course opens the door to a lifetime of enriching engagement with the arts. Undergraduate majors acquire knowledge of diverse cultures and skills of observation critical to success in jobs working with people. Graduate students prepare for careers in education, museums, the art market, and diverse fields requiring visual knowledge and analytic skills.

Vision Statement

Committed to the highest standards of instruction and innovative research, we develop and employ ways of teaching to ensure that our students achieve mastery of visual knowledge and tools to interpret it for diverse audiences. We educate students to use new technologies to make and share discoveries. We engage with communities beyond the university to increase public awareness of the social and economic value of the study of art history.
