History of Art Graduate Degrees

In satisfying the Graduate Studies requirement for demonstrated proficiency in two research skills, the Department of Art History requires candidates to satisfy the following prior to admission to the comprehensive examinations:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of at least one foreign language relevant to the student's research interests. For Western art students, the language is customarily a modern European one; for Asian art students, Chinese and Japanese. A student whose native language is not English may use the native language to fulfill the language requirement, but only if the language is considered to be an appropriate research tool for that student's program. Language proficiency may be demonstrated (1) by passing a departmental proficiency exam, or (2) by completing with a B or better the fourth-semester level of a language course. Students who enter the program with an MA from elsewhere may use that MA degree's language certification to meet this language requirement by providing appropriate written evidence to the appropriate graduate advisor during the first semester of KU enrollment. *PhD students may be required by their Ph.D. committee to demonstrate proficiency in two or more foreign languages, depending on the student's area of specialization and program of study. Students who enter the Ph.D. program with an M.A. from elsewhere

2. Successful completion of at least one 700-level or above History of Art seminar course
