American Art & Culture Since 1900
This course will examine the development of art in the United States from the turn of the 20th century to the early 21st century. We will explore a wide range of media within social, cultural, economic, political and theoretical contexts and consider the multiplicity of styles, cultures, identities and geographies that constitute American art. We will attend to artistic expression and negotiation of issues of class, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. The work of major artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Isamu Noguchi, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, and Kara Walker will be considered. The 500 level is intended for graduate students.
