Art of the United States
This course examines the history of art in the United States from the late-colonial period of the 1700s through to the mid-20th century. With a focus on the central role that artistic production and consumption played in constructing American social identities and culture, we pay particular attention to the contributions of minority and marginalized groups as active agents in the development of a national culture. Other topics include transnational perspectives on American art, the influence of European traditions, ideas of modernity and the modern artist in American culture, and relationships between art and material culture in American life.
This course is offered at the 300 and 500 level with additional work required at the 500 level. Same course may not be taken at both the 300 and 500-levels. Prerequisite: HA 100, HA 151, or the equivalent, or consent of instructor.
