The Art of Buddhism
This course examines the history of Buddhist art interpreted from visual, historical, social, and political perspectives with a focus on India, China, and Japan. Representative topics include archaeological discoveries, ritual practice, architecture, transmission between cultures, and relationships between sacred writing and text. Our goals will be to enhance the ability to analyze, write about, and talk about art and Buddhism. We will also have opportunities to use works in the Spencer Museum of Art in this class.
