Course Description

This course will examine Japanese painting from a range of different historical periods as well as perspectives. We will begin with prehistoric two-dimensional imagery and end with modern paintings from the 20th century. The course will also cover Japanese prints, which are an important part of Japanese painting history. During class sessions students will develop a basic knowledge of the historical background, terminology, and visual vocabulary of Japanese painting. Students will learn to identify major artists, styles, schools, periods, and develop the critical skills needed to discuss Japanese painting.
