This course will examine Japanese sculpture from a range of different historical periods as well as perspectives. We will begin with prehistoric terracotta tomb figures and end with modern Western-style sculpture of the 20th century. The class will address Buddhist sculpture in depth and also include a unit on traditional Japanese ceramics. During class sessions, students will develop a basic knowledge of the historical background, terminology, and visual vocabulary of Japanese sculpture. Students will learn to identify major artists, styles, schools, periods, and develop the critical skills needed to discuss Japanese sculpture.
