Synergies: Image & Text in Later East Asian Art

Image-text synergies are an essential aspect of painting and calligraphy in China, Japan, and Korea in the 15th through 20th centuries. Combined with poetry, they are known as “The Three Perfections.” Recent scholarship has used image-text synergies to explore meanings and purposes of artworks and their makers. Identity, faith, political affiliations, aesthetic credos, and community are some of the issues expressed through image-text artworks. Students will have the opportunity to learn from a renowned expert on this subject, Professor Peter Sturman, and to work on a research project under his direction. Co-taught with Professor Amy McNair.
