HA 706/906 Seminar
Art and Politics of the Revolution and Early Republic
This seminar will examine recent literature on the role of visual culture and artists in the history of the American Revolution and the early Republic. While many studies of this period end with the end of the Revolution, we will consider continuities and changes between the Revolutionary moment and the first years of the US Republic. The course will familiarize students with new scholarship that emphasizes the contributions of women, enslaved and free people of African descent, and Indigenous people. We will also consider how the field of American Revolutionary art history has evolved in the last few decades by comparing earlier scholarship with more recent turns in the field.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
