HA 706 / 906 Seminar

History of Intaglio Print

This seminar explores intaglio printmaking (e.g., engraving, etching, drypoint, aquatint, and mezzotint) from 1400-1800 with a focus on Europe. Meetings will center on object-based study of single-sheet prints and illustrated books in KU collections and will involve professionals in the field, such as curators and practicing artists. Intensive study of materials and techniques will prepare students to engage with innovative research on the medium of intaglio, including social histories, global trade, experimentation and failure, epistemic images, and cultures of reproduction. Students will gain foundational skills in analyzing and interpreting prints, as well as a grounding in current debates animating scholarship in the field.
