HA 706/995 Seminar in Korean Art

Korean Architecture

Architecture is built living space. Buildings not only provide shelter but also reflect the beliefs, political ideologies, religious affiliations, aesthetic preferences, and the private and public lives of those who construct and inhabit them. In this seminar, we will delve into the rich tapestry of architectural developments on the Korean peninsula. Our discussion will encompass a wide array of structures, from the planning and design of ancient tombs and Buddhist temples to vernacular architecture such as hanok homes, royal palaces, and colonial architecture. No knowledge in East Asian languages required.

HA 706 and HA 995 are concentrated studies of a specific topic in art history. These courses may be repeated for credit if content varies. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
