HA 719 Art Histories
Theory and Methodology
In this course we will examine and critically assess the major methodologies and theories that have shaped and continue to shape the field of art history (emphasizing the latter). As we explore some of the ideas that have formed the foundation of the field, we will consider the ways in which they have constructed and reinforced certain hierarchies and biases that linger both visibly and invisibly. We will largely focus on the current state of the discipline, understanding that it is never static and is always under construction. Engaging with theories that center, for example, the environment, materiality, race, sexuality, decolonialization, the global and transnational, and the overall need for more expansive and inclusive forms of analysis, we will investigate and evaluate not just the existing literature but also our own positions as scholars of art history.
