Ecocritical Perspectives on Korean Art
This seminar explores the environmental implications of artistic production in Korea through an ecocritical lens, looking at both historical and contemporary practices. Focusing on the five classical elements (fire, water, wood, metal, and earth), the seminar investigates the ecological impact of various artistic processes, from kiln-firing technology for ceramics, pigment procurement for paintings, and metal casting for sculptures to broader themes such as urbanization, climate change, and waste.
