HA 788/990 Seminar
LIfe Stories
How do pictures and objects tell us about life in ways that words cannot? In this graduate seminar, we will consider topics related to premodern and modern art of Japan and its neighbors that address both human and non-human biographies and life narratives. This seminar coincides with the exhibition Street Nihonga: The Art of Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani (Feb. 19–June 28, 2026) at the Spencer Museum of Art. This first major retrospective honors Japanese American artist Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani (1920–2012), who trained in traditional painting in Japan and later became a prolific creator in New York City while living unhoused. We will also have a chance to work with visiting artist Ayomi Yoshida of international renown, and member of the distinguished Yoshida family of printmakers.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
