Biography —
Mia Hafer's research interests include representations of identity and otherness, and how markers of gender, sexuality, religion, and nationality inform medieval secular imagery. She primarily focuses on the later Middle Ages, exploring how the increased mobility of the time fueled a flourishing of representations of the exotic "other" both in manuscripts and other portable objects. Her secondary area of study examines the trade and production of walrus ivory objects in the Gothic area, interrogating how the understudied material would have been valued within the market at the time.
