Art & Culture of Korea
Discover Korea’s rich history through art! This course takes you from glittering Silla gold crowns to stunning Koryŏ Buddhist manuscripts and vibrant Chosŏn paintings. We will explore how objects reflect major cultural transformations, from Silla gold and Silk Road exchanges to Koryŏ Buddhist manuscripts and ritual art, and from Chosŏn landscapes and portraiture to calligraphy, lacquer, and shamanic painting. You will visit the library and museum, practice visual analysis, and dive into short, hands-on research projects. No background in Korean studies required. By the end of the semester, you will not only know the story of Korea’s past but also how art brings that story to life.
