American Art [Art of the United States]

This course explores the art and visual culture of the United States from the American Revolution to the 20th century, considering the central role that artistic production and consumption played in constructing American social identities and culture. The course will particularly highlight the contributions of Black, Indigenous, and immigrant peoples as active agents in the development of a national culture, and as counter-voices to the dominant white constructions of national identity.

Throughout the course, we will question the borders and boundaries that have defined the where, when, and what of art history in the United States.
