The Spatial Arts of Urban Italy

This course examines the central role played by the arts of urbanism, architecture, and monumental sculpture in shaping the distinctive civic cultures of Italy from the late Middle Ages to the dawn of the Renaissance (ca. 1200–1600). It will pay particular attention to the republics of Florence, Parma, and Venice, briefly consider papal Rome and Pienza, and—as time allows—sample one or two of Italy’s magnificent court cities and smaller republics (such as Milan, Ferrara, Verona, Naples, Padua, Siena).
