Art of the 1990's
This seminar will examine the art of the 1990s through critical and scholarly writings about the work of a diverse group of artists who achieved major recognition during that complex and dynamic decade bookended by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and 9/11. Multivalent themes creatively addressed in their art include the body and identity, memory and history, the power of place, spirituality, the digital revolution, and globalization.
Artists whose work may be considered include Janine Antoni, Matthew Barney, Robert Gober, Félix González-Torres, Wenda Gu, Andreas Gursky, Ann Hamilton, Mona Hatoum, William Kentridge, Mariko Mori, Takashi Murakami, Shirin Neshat, Catherine Opie, Neo Rauch, Doris Salcedo, Yinka Shonibare, Shahzia Sikander, Kiki Smith, Do Ho Suh, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Bill Viola, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, Fred Wilson, Rachel Whiteread, Xu Bing, and Zhang Huan.
