In this seminar we will explore the history and historiography of Korean painting from its beginnings to the 21st century. We will focus on the ways in which scholars have approached the development of format, style, subject matter (landscape, figure, flowers and birds), technique, etc., within the history of Korean art and material culture. Works to be discussed include An Kyŏn’s Peach Blossom Land painting, Chŏng Sŏn’s “true-view” landscape painting, late Chosŏn dynasty still-life painting, and modern and contemporary artists including Lee Quede, Sin Hakch’ŏl, and Park Seo-bo.
