The Spatial Arts of Urban Italy
This course examines the central role played by the arts of urbanism, architecture, and monumental sculpture in shaping the distinctive civic cultures of Italy at the threshold of the Renaissance, 1200-1550. It will pay particular attention to the republics of Florence and Venice, but also consider papal Rome and Pienza, and a changing selection of Italy's magnificent court cities (including Milan, Padua, Parma, and Verona).
